Dental filling Treatment at B & G dentistry

More than 9 out of 10 Americans have cavities. Chances are you have or will develop cavities at some point in your life. Here at B&G Family Dentistry cavities are one of the most common ailments we help people with throughout the Livingston area. Cavities are cared for with dental restorations, more commonly known as dental fillings.

What Is A Dental Filling?

Dental fillings restore the function, strength, and shape of a damaged tooth. Restoring the tooth to a healthy form is done in two main steps:

  • Tooth Preparation
  • Restoration or Filling

The preparation process starts with removal of decayed portions of the tooth. Once the decay is fully removed, the area is cleaned.

The next phase of the dental restoration procedure is filling the missing parts of the tooth. This is done with a resin material that sets with a blue curing light. Once your fillings are fully set and your bite has been adjusted, your teeth should function as normal.

When Is A Dental Filling Needed?

There are a number of reasons why someone would need a filling.

Decay

Decay, also known as a cavity, is the most common reason for fillings. Decay is caused by bacteria in your mouth that love acidic, high-sugar diets. Cavities are not always painful, but it is important to treat it with a filling before its condition worsens as it can lead to pain, infection, and tooth loss.

Fractures

Besides the common cavity, your tooth may need to be filled due to a fracture. Fractures can be caused by automobile accidents, falls, sporting accidents or by any other violent contact to your face. Fracture damage can often be fixed with a white composite filling. This composite is both highly effective and natural looking.
